Workshop Presentation:
The Importance of Nutrition in Healing Trauma.
In working with people suffering from the effects of physical and emotional trauma on the body, we focus on resolving the cascading ill-effects of inflammation and the importance of decreasing inflammation as soon as possible.
The gut and brain are connected via the Vagus Nerve, therefore when there is inflammation in the gut there is inflammation in the brain. Symptoms such as: anxiety/depression, leaky gut, allergies, insomnia, constipation/diarrhea can all result from inflammatory effects on the gut and brain. These symptoms can all lead to other more serious issues.
We take into consideration the ACE (adverse childhood experiences) study and how the ACE study is a predictor for health issues and potential outcomes of trauma along with other detailed history.
We will discuss the importance of digestion when healing from trauma. The organs of digestion will be reviewed along with symptoms associated with dysfunction. We will talk about the microbiome and the impact of dysbiosis.
Included in our discussion will be the impact of certain foods and spices in healing. We follow Hippocrates thinking of using food as medicine. Healing the gut lining with bone broth is recommended for everyone, but not everyone can tolerate it and we tell you why. Using traditional cooking methods, whole and fermented foods is also helpful in maintaining nutrients and supplying good food for the good bacteria in your microbiome.
Despite all efforts with food, some supplementation may be necessary. We will explain the most important supplements to assist in healing.
We will end by informing the audience of our approach to functional nutrition in healing the effects of trauma.
Bio:
Anne Morrison and Sandy Wesson are both Registered Nurses, Functional Nutritionists, Neurofeedback Practitioners and Detoxification Specialists. We started BrainWorks of Oregon to specialize in digestive and brain health. We do Nutritional Evaluations with a functional exam, Cellular Detoxification, QEEG Brain Mapping and brain training with neurofeedback.
We believe that getting digestion on track is the number one foundation to health, with the understanding that the gut and brain are connected. Experience has shown us that along with microbiome dysfunction, brainwaves may get stuck in certain patterns which can prevent further improvements in health and optimal brain function. These dysfunctional brainwaves can be retrained with neurofeedback.
In this toxic world we understand the need for detoxification to improve cellular function. By decreasing our toxic load, we improve the ability of the mitochondria to make cellular energy. This improves our immune system so the body can heal.
At BrainWorks of Oregon we combine our experience in conventional medicine with alternative therapies to develop a plan for optimal health, recognizing each person’s bio-individual needs.
