Grief and Loss: The Mental Strain Our Minds Hold for Us

Haelan House presents this month’s presentation about healing trauma and its effects on our mental well-being.

Some people, when they hear the term grief automatically think about the loss of a loved one, or maybe a pet. But grief is also present in any type of loss; loss of a relationship, loss of a job, loss of connection (as in the last year), loss of familiar surroundings as when you move to a new place, loss of a friendship, loss of health or loss of financial stability. For any type of loss, it’s important to recognize grief as a natural part of that.

Maria Cookson, our featured presenter will talk about her story with grief and the mental strain it caused. Most of us are taught to stuff the grief and loss inside of us (which then can cause trauma), to try to forget the loss. This can take quite a toll on us mentally. This mental stress can be compounded over time, especially when a child is taught to ignore the grief and associated emotions (get over it) or were denied expressive outlets to acknowledge the mental anguish of the grief or loss.

Over time, grief and associated emotions can move deeper inward and be destructive to the body as a whole, if not acknowledged and freed.
